Intro
This external fixation system for orthopedic medical treatment, including the Distal Radius Fixator, offers versatility in fixing small bone fractures. The modular frame construction provides a high degree of flexibility among a wide variety of Small External Fixator products. Patients can avoid the risk of extremities shifting after surgery, even if re-surgery is necessary. Unmet Need
Supracondylar humeral fractures are the most common elbow fractures in children. Closed reduction and internal fixation using percutaneous Kirschner wires (K-wires) are widely recommended for Gartland type II and III fractures. After percutaneous pinning, the K-wires are bent at the skin edge and cut. The cutoff point is about 1 cm outside of the skin. The diameters of the K-wires are between 1.5~2.0 mm; the surface of the K-wires is smooth. Therefore, the K-wires are easy to rotate and migrate. Proximal migration or rotation of the K-wire could injure the skin. Distal migration of a K-wire could result in loss of reduction and fixation. So, stabilization of the K-wires could result in loss of reduction and fixation. Therefore, stabilization of the K-wires is important.
Our Solution
Our research team developed a K-wire external fixation device. The device is required to connect K-wires. After connecting, the structure of the K-wires is transformed into an external skeletal fixator. So, the K-wires are stabilized and unable to migrate independently. This device improves the stability of fracture fixation in patients. We have patents for this device in Taiwan and the USA.
The clinical result proves that the torque and torsional stiffness of the K-wire external fixation device was greater than that of traditional pinning. Our solution improves the stability of K-wire fixation and avoids K-wire-related complications. Every ESF pack is designed for male and female connectors. Allen key is required for proper application.
